Big into the arts, sports, nightlife, shopping and people, large and lively Melbourne is a cultured and diverse place with an affordable selection of midrange downtown hotels and in its exciting St Kilda beachfront neighborhood.
Australia’s second city is an urban sprawl on the southern Victoria coast and comes with high humidity, but great beaches at the same time. It hums with excitement year round due to its multi-ethnic neighborhoods, its buzzing CBD, and through the many major sporting events that are staged here, from cricket to rugby and Formula One motor racing. Melbourne is also noted for its arty aspirations, with some massive galleries and theaters, while vineyards, mountains, and great ocean drives are nearby.

Key attractions
Downtown attractions consist of a collection of historic reminders of Britain, including the Old Melbourne Gaol where bandit Ned Kelly was hanged, along with more modern sights like the lofty Eureka Tower on the Southbank. The National Gallery of Victoria has some of the finest Aussie art in the country, while the revitalized Docklands boasts trendy cafés. The St Kilda area, father south, is famed among visitors for its easier pace and beaches, with nearby Brighton Beach being the city’s favorite.

Having fun
Culture vultures will want to see the royal theaters of Her Majesty and Princess, stunning venues with great line-ups. For food, the Footscray area offers a wide range of cuisines, including Vietnamese, while bustling Chinatown in downtown has cheap eats and there are great Greek and Italian eateries all over. Melbourne does nightlife better than it does anything else, with a massive range of bars catering well to sports fans in particular and also to hip students. St Kilda is liveliest, the riverside area in town the trendiest.

Shopping
The Aussie ‘shopping capital’ is also the fashion capital and has more boutiques and clothes shops than anywhere in the country, per capita. Little Collins Street, downtown, is especially up there for designer wear and the adjacent Collins Street has many well known high-end fashion stores in the historic Block Arcade. Head east to Bridge Road in Richmond for cheaper clothes, or to Brunswick Street in Fitzroy for offbeat and eclectic. Malls can be found all over town, with the Bourke Street Mall and Melbourne Central two of the better known shopping centers.

Nearby
Port Phillip Bay is good for exploring by car and has nice beaches along its course, as does the nearby Phillip Island, accessible by bridge or ferry. An hour northeast is the Yarra Valley, home to some of the best vineyards in the region, with the nearby Dandenong Range providing exciting hiking opportunities. In the other direction Woodlands Historic Park provides a touch of the past just 20 minutes from downtown. The main draw to this region, though, is the spectacular Great Ocean Road, which begins around an hour southwest of Melbourne at Bells Beach and takes in the amazing Twelve Apostles.
