The ‘Harbor City’ is the first port of call for most visitors to Australia. Loaded with iconic sights and fantastic beaches, it also sports many fabulous chain hotels in the CBD and in The Rocks area, often with harbor views and near to quality restaurants.
Although not the capital—though certainly the largest and most talked about city in Australia—Sydney, host of the 2000 Olympics and home of the iconic Opera House and that dazzling harbor, hums with excitement and livability. It is loaded with historic sites from the days of the Brits and boasts unbelievable eating and entertainment opportunities, not to mention its other main draw, the beaches. There are dozens here, including one or two of the finest city beaches in the world.

Key attractions
Anyone who thinks of Sydney immediately pictures the billowing sails of the grand Sydney Opera House, one of the world’s most impressive structures. It sits on the edge of Circular Quay, across from the historic Rocks area, itself under the monumental Sydney Harbor Bridge. Other notable landmarks include the beautiful Royal Botanical Gardens, the Sydney Aquarium at the revamped Darling Harbor, and the city’s many beaches of which there are around 70. Bondi and Manly are surf-friendly and simply awesome.

Having fun
The Opera House is reasonably priced and you can even secure tickets on the day of the performance in some cases. There’s good eating and nightlife in nearby Darling Harbor—described somewhat as hip and trendy—as well as in downtown along George Street, with nearby Chinatown offering Asian treats. Nightlife can get seedy in the Kings Cross area if that’s your thing, or check out one of the lively suburbs like Glebe for bohemian atmosphere and real Aussie pubs.

Shopping
Queen Victoria Building is one of the favorites for shopping, a stunning colonial, red sandstone place in the middle of skyscraper city featuring hundreds of stores, with bargains in the basement and designer wear up top. Equally high-end is Castlereagh Street in downtown, which is good for boutiques and jewelry, or for better prices and people-watching, try the adjacent Pitt Street Mall. This pedestrian thoroughfare has many flagship stores and is always busy. Nearby Oxford Street has good shops and bars, but for souvenirs try The Rocks.

Nearby
The Blue Mountains is a major daytrip option from Sydney, lying an hour to the west amid the Blue Mountains National Park. There are some cool towns to lunch at here and naturally excellent walking trails. Two hours north are the vineyards of the Hunter Valley wine region, which is less than an hour’s drive from nearby Newcastle. In the other direction from Sydney is historic Botany Bay, where Cook first landed, while further south is the fun coastal town of Wollongong and the incredible Morton National Park south west of here.
