The cities and towns along the Adriatic coast are some of the most beautiful corners of the Mediterranean. However, none of them hold a candle to the city of Dubrovnik, in Croatia's Dalmatia region. Tourists staying here are spoiled for choice with regard to accommodations with fine sea views.
Much of what many holiday makers see today in the beautiful city of Dubrovnik can be traced back to when it was a powerful maritime republic called Ragusa. By the 1600s, it rivaled Venice in pomp and grandeur. The medieval fortifications which enclosed old Dubrovnik and protected it from sea invaders still exist today. Cobblestone streets, churches, and beautiful old stone houses with red roofs by the sunny shores of the Adriatic are what make Dubrovnik one of the most popular destinations in Europe.

Key attractions
Dubrovnik's Old Town is the best place to soak in the old world charms of this medieval city. You can walk along Placa Stradun, the main strip, and explore its side streets and alleys. There are many shops here, as well as cafés and restaurants with outdoor seating. Walk toward the coast and climb Dubrovnik's City Walls, which provide stunning views of the city and the sea. St Ignatius Church, with its intricately designed staircase, is another great place to visit. Elsewhere, Lapad Beach and Banje Beach make for a relaxing day out.

Having fun
If you visit during the high seasons (spring and summer), you will be able to catch various events around town. Many are staged in the Old Town, along Placa Stradun. The historic core is home to a number of restaurants and cafés. The seafood of this coastal city is, of course, exceptional and highly recommended. Lady Pipi is a traditional restaurant with a rooftop seating area that provides diners with fantastic views of the Old Town. Great views can also be had in Gil's Cuisine, one of the newest dining and drinking spot in Dubrovnik.

Shopping
You can begin shopping in Dubrovnik at Placa Stradun. The cobblestone streets and lanes of the Old Town are lined with shops selling not only touristy souvenirs, but high-quality artisanal merchandise. Home ware items like linens, tablecloths, and textile, as well as the internationally-used clothing item which locals claim originated in the city—the necktie, are widely available. Shops in the Old Town sell wines, while unique Croatian products, such as jams and spices, are found in Uje, and jewelry is sold in Magnolika.

Nearby
You can take advantage of the beautiful sights of the Adriatic by chartering a yacht or a boat. One of the best places to sail to is Lokrum. This relaxing nature park with a monastery, beaches, and gardens makes for an ideal daytrip. A short bus ride from Dubrovnik is Herceg Novi. This seaside destination in Montenegro has a charming coastal town appeal. However, unlike Dubrovnik, it is far less touristy and therefore quieter and more peaceful.

The largest concentrations of sites are seen along the pedestrianized thoroughfare that stretches from the historic Pile Gate. The most impressive is the 14th century Franciscan Monastery with its well preserved and elegant interiors. Nearby, the Sponza Palace magnificently displays late Gothic and early R
