The Big Mango, also known as the Venice of the East, outdoes most capital cities with the choice, price, and quality of its hotels. All the main chains are here and the competition is fierce, right up to the height of luxury. December to February is peak season.
Thailand’s largest city, capital, and main port is a place of huge temples, even bigger shopping malls, fabulous eating, and non-stop action day and night. Though heavy on traffic, pollution, and noise, it is quickly being modernized, including its once struggling transport system, and easily rivals any other city in Southeast Asia for sheer fun. Bangkok appeals to all types, with everything from high culture in its theaters and top hotels, to naughty nightlife, spicy cuisine, and glitzy shopping on the streets.

Key attractions
Top attractions are in the Old Town (Rattanakosin island, by the river), including the beautiful Grand Palace and the associated Temple of the Emerald Buddha. The high profile Wat Po temple, close by, is noted for its massive ‘reclining’ Buddha statue, while the older Temple of Dawn (Wat Arun), across the river, is good for views. You can get to the busy Chinatown and backpacker hub Khao San Road from here. Other musts include the Vimanmek teak mansion and Jim Thompson’s house near the big malls around Siam Square.

Having fun
Bangkok is unsurprisingly one of the world’s liveliest cities, with its bars and pubs, clubs and lounges, and everything in between. Go-go bars are ubiquitous in Nana and Pat Pong, while Khao San Road is an epicenter for backpackers. There’s a huge choice of traditional Thai shows at city theaters and in the big hotels, with the National Theater arguably having the best productions. Eating out is excellent value for money, with everything from tasty street-side noodles to the finest Thai, French, and Italian cuisines.

Shopping
The shopping is as high profile as the dining, with Siam Square being the center of it all and boasting malls and swish boutiques to rival those anywhere in the world. The Siam Discovery Center and Siam Paragon feature all the top brands. You can also hit the streets and markets to pick up cheap souvenirs, t-shirts, and sunglasses or take in the world famous Chatuchak weekend market, which has thousands of stalls.

Nearby
There is much to see within an hour’s drive of the city. The old Thai capital of Ayutthaya, about an hour north of the city, makes for a fine daytrip. To the southwest is the main floating market at Damnoen Saduak, while Samut Prakarn Crocodile Farm is a must for kids. The latter is not far from the Ancient City—about a 30-minute drive from central Bangkok—and sports miniatures of various buildings from all over Thailand. Other nearby sights include the famous Rose Garden and Ko Kret island for pottery.
