The Romans were on to something when they built a bathing complex in Bath. This marked the spa town's importance as a center of culture and history, a status it still holds today. Four million tourists come here yearly, and stay in the elegant and stylish accommodations available around the city.

Bath is a visually beautiful city. It has some of England's finest examples of Georgian architecture, medieval gems, and of course, its Roman baths. Many known authors, including Jane Austen, have chosen Bath as the setting for their work - a testament to how interesting and alive the city is. Beneath the historic sites and cultural attractions, however, you can be sure to find Bath's modern side.

Key attractions
The Roman baths are perhaps the primary reason why Bath exists, so a visit here is a must. Geothermal springs make the hot pools possible. All are contained in an ornate bathhouse. Another iconic structure in the city is the Palladian-style Pulteney Bridge which straddles the River Avon. At one end of the bridge is Great Pulteney Street, along which stand some of the city's finest Georgian buildings. A semi-elliptical row of houses known as the Royal Crescent is a huge attraction here. Meanwhile, Victoria Park and Parade Gardens are excellent parks to relax in.

Having fun
Entertainment in Bath is diverse. The city offers high-brow art exhibits as well as comedy shows. The Bath Christmas Market, the Bath Literature Festival, and the Jane Austen Summer Ball are just some of the things to watch out for when visiting the city. There is a wide range of choices when it comes to dining or drinking out in Bath. Highly-acclaimed restaurants such as The Olive Tree serve British fare, while Rajpoot Tandoori has some of the most delicious Indian food in the city.

Shopping
It is no surprise that this popular tourist destination has a number of shopping areas. The Central Area has all the usual clothing and accessories brands but also jewelry stores and independent galleries. Those looking for high-quality arts and crafts can visit the Artisan Quarter. There is a flea market, held every Saturday, in this area. Upscale fashion brands, meanwhile, can be found in the award-winning Milsom Street shopping area. Another great area to explore is Green Park Station, which is home to Bath's farmers' market.

Nearby
Just a few minutes' drive northwest of Bath is the city of Bristol. Various festivals take place here, particularly during the summer months. Aside from taking in its historical attractions, such as Brunel's SS Great Britain and architectural marvels such as the Clifton Suspension Bridge, you can lazily ride a ferry along the River Avon. For a more low-key daytrip from Bath, there is Bradford on Avon. It is home to a picturesque old town and structures dating from Saxon, Roman, and Georgian times.
