Noted for historic buildings, breweries, and huge flower festival, the City of Roses comes with a mouthwatering array of accommodations, from the Victorian-centric northwest district and fine bed and breakfasts, to reasonably priced chains in the heart of downtown where Benson Bubblers are close at hand.
Oregon’s largest city is well set on the Willamette River and is underrated for its great shopping, many parks, and backdrop of mountains. An arty city noted for its galleries and festivals, it comes with an abundance of sun and many historic buildings in its core. The Rose Festival in June is a major event though the city is perhaps best known for its heady collection of microbreweries.

Key attractions
The Pioneer Courthouse in the square of the same name hails from the 1860s and is a fine example of Portland real estate of the day. Here, you can learn history at the Oregon Maritime Center, with its impressive vessels. Another top landmark is the Portlandia statue, while the Aerial Tram from South Waterfront gives great city views. Portland has a lot of parks and gardens, including the vast Washington Park and the International Rose Test Garden, a must-do in summer.

Having fun
There are several places to have fun, with Portland having more pubs than anywhere in the States. Head to northwest downtown to Pearl District and Nob Hill for the best action. These areas are loaded with trendy bars and pubs, along with swanky art galleries and eateries where you can dine on Pacific Northwest cuisine or virtually any ethnic food. For a slice of culture, check out Pioneer Courthouse square, which lays on fun performances, or alternatively visit one of the many theater-pubs.

Shopping
Portland is a tax-free city and there is a lot of opportunity for swanky shopping near Pioneer Courthouse Square where the likes of Saks Fifth Avenue are within strolling distance. Head to Nob Hill for the trendiest boutiques and galleries or to Sellwood for antiques. Another great shopping experience in Portland is the Portland Saturday Market with its arts and crafts, and ethnic foods. There is no better place for a good read than the gigantic Powell's City of Books, one of the largest bookstores of its kind in the US.

Nearby
Beaches and volcanoes are within an hour’s drive of Portland. Mount St Helens is one of the top daytrip destinations, just 1 hour, 30 minutes by car to the northeast. Closer still is the Columbia River Gorge with its dozens of waterfalls, including the lofty Multnomah Falls, the highest in Oregon. There are also many wineries in the Willamette Valley area of Oregon Wine Country, within a 30-minute drive southwest of the city. Head to Seaside along Highway 26 for the beach.
