DALLAS: Cheap Hotels in Dallas
Dallas epitomizes that unmistakable Texan swagger with its fancy malls, tasty barbecue, and pervasive cowboy ambiance. This city is loads of fun by day or night, and a slew of accommodations ensure anyone can find lodging to fit the bill.
The Big D is definitely an apt nickname for Dallas, a glittering metropolis in the heart of Texas where everything is done on a grand scale. Texans wouldn't have it any other way, so visitors who want the full Lone Star experience should make a point of spending a few days immersing themselves in the boots, hats, and honky-tonks of Dallas. Its Arts District is as impressive as anything in the West, showcasing art by day and performances after dark. Ditch the diet because Dallas excels at mouth-watering meat, cold beer, and boot-kicking live country music.
Dallas is a city that revolves around the mythology of the cowboy. Nearly every visitor makes a pilgrimage to Western Warehouse or Wild Bill's for new digs, or plans an evening at Gilley's honky-tonk. The Arts District features two stellar venues: the Nasher Sculpture Center and the Meadows Museum of Art. On a sunny day, the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden provide a 70-acre oasis of historic buildings, water, and woodlands to explore. The city's Wild West roots are recreated at the Dallas Heritage Village, a perfect 19th-century Texas town with all the trimmings.
Between Dallas and its Siamese twin Fort Worth, there are more places to drink, dance, and listen to live music than you can shake your boots at. A night out at a Texan honky-tonk like Gilley's or Billy Bob's never fails to entertain if you like two-stepping and country music. The Uptown district is where the trendy side of Dallas goes to play, while the cultural performances are top-drawer at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center and the Dallas Center for Performing Arts. There are a dozen excellent theater troupes here along with watering holes ranging from Deep Ellum dives to cocktail bars 50 stories up, like the Dome.
Dallas virtually invented the sport of retail shopping so expect a complete subculture of socializing and consumption based around this city's vibrant malls. Shopping venues range from the Euro-flavored outdoor West Village to a whole neighborhood called Uptown that features a trolley running its length for easy travel. Massive shopping malls run rampant here, including the Galleria and the high-end Highland Park Village. For classic Western wear, nothing can touch Wild Bill's or the Western Warehouse.
The Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area is so vast that most daytrips never even breach its perimeter. But there is plenty to see and do within an hour's drive. Kick back at Lake Texoma for a day of sunning and swimming or stroll the historic town of Denton for a glimpse into the Texas of old. You can play a round of golf at a stunning course like Bear Creek Golf Club or visit the actual Southfork Ranch where the television show Dallas was filmed.

Local expert's tips
Let’s “Eat Cheap” in Dallas Texas
The first on the list is a great place to start as well as being quite the recent trend in the U.S. One of the very first food trucks in the Dallas area was Nammi, and it is still popping out some yummy treats today. You can usually find the food truck in Siegel’s parking lot. You’ll think we are crazy because Siegel’s is a Beer, Wine & Spirits mega store, but believe the locals, who eat there, this is awesome food. Everything on the menu is super, but the headliner is the Barbeque Pork Bahn Mi, which is a 12-inch roll. With pork, cilantro, garlic mayo, cucumber, jalapeños, carrot and pickled daikon. Best of all, just pick up a cold beer or two in Siegel’s before you order.
Next lets look at another favorite, The Dog Stop located on Arapaho Rd. You guessed it, hot dogs, but not just any dog. This is one tasty ho dog loaded with mustard, tomatoes, jalapeños and a pleasant surprise, salary salt. Don’t ask, just munch away. The dogs are cheap, and it’s cash only at this stop. If you need a cool burst of flavor with that dog, try their shaved ices.
Now lets talk real savings on an awesome food group that usually costs a bankroll and your life savings. We are talking about Kazy’s Gourmet on Markville Drive, Dallas. If you are a fan of sushi, then you know how expensive it can get sitting at the sushi bar, ordering sashimi grade fish and other delights. You are in for a windfall to your wallet and taste buds at this Japanese market, which provides the fresh fish to local high-end restaurants. Here when you stand in line, you can order sushi rolls for only $2, and get plates with six rolls for only $20. It’s not that fancy restaurant and sushi bar, but you won’t be paying five or six times more for the same dishes.
If your into fresh seafood at a really good price, and no frills, then head to where the locals go, Hook Line & Sinker located on Preston Rd. is the place to go. It’s a casual place so leave the tux back in the room. Great prices on seafood, and the locals go nuts over the pounders of shrimp or crab. If you happen to be there in the winter months, it’s all about the oysters.
Finally lets take a look at some down home Tex-Mex gourmet delights. One of the best favorites is Zuzu’s Fresh-Made Tex Mex, located on Abrams Rd. Always fresh, always cheap and hearty and serving their delights from 11 AM until 9 PM daily.
Now you can go for broke with a Tex-Mex platter, like Burritos, Tacos or Flautas for under $8 including 2 side dishes. Or, you can order off their “super value menu”, for $1 per choice. These tasty choices include crispy or soft beef taco, fried Quesadilla, chicken flauta and much more. The list goes on and on, and included a terrific children’s menu, with most Mexican choices under $2.
Finding Your Way in Dallas Texas
There is something to be said about a town that loves its steakhouses and its football team but Dallas is about way more. Take a walk around the Downtown area and you see a modern cosmopolitan city filled with southern hospitality and big, giant, Texas sized heart. If you need something to do in the Big D we have a few ideas for you.
If it’s football season you have to try to get in to see a Dallas Cowboy game. Technically the stadium is in Arlington but the Dallas Cowboys are all about Dallas. If you would rather watch some hockey the Dallas Stars play right in Downtown as do the Dallas Mavericks. Located in the center of the action you can walk there from Downtown hotels and there are an ample amount of chain restaurants nearby to keep you fed.
Klyde Warren Park is in the heart of the Downtown area and it is 5+ acres of fun free activities as well as an opportunity to appreciate the great outdoors right in the heart of Dallas. Events such as free concerts, book readings, fitness classes and culinary events highlight the area that also has a children’s area and a spot for your pets. Have a meal at Savor or just enjoy a cocktail with a view of the park visitors. The park is built over a freeway and is the ideal example of an urban, green space in the middle of a busy metropolitan area.
Texas is BBQ country and they do it well in Dallas as well. Checkout Pecan lodge or Slow Bone for an example of barbecue in Dallas but when it come to meat you need a real Texas Steak house. For my money I am visiting Pappas Bros Steak house and not just because they have a wine cellar that is larger than my home. Dry aged steak and plenty of hospitality make it a local favorite. People rave about Nick and Sam’s and Knife but Chef John Tesar is cutting edge when it comes to aging beef in Dallas and offering affordable cuts of beef to the budget conscious steak lover.
If you want to get a little exercise in while you are in Dallas you should head out to the Katy Trail where you can put on your running shoes or tighten up your in-line skates and give it a go. The landscaped trail is great for exercise but with a few good spots along the trail to have a meal you can run to lunch and the run off those excess calories. The trail is free.
The Sixth Floor Museum in Dealey Plaza is a museum that showcases artifacts and information about President John F. Kennedy and the events before, during and after his assassination from this spot. The museum is in the actual Texas School Book Depository building where evidence suggests a shooter assassinated the President from.
Perot Museum of Natural Science is located in Victory Park near Downtown Dallas and it opened in September 2012. Interactive exhibits and the latest in technology will ensure that you will have an intriguing time exploring the sciences from biology and geology to technology and energy. Oh, yes, they do have a few Dinosaurs, what would a museum be with out a few old bones.
