Known for its old world appeal and European ambiance, Buenos Aires is where the dance of passion and romance known as the tango was invented. All of these draws, along with its wide selection of cheap and excellent accommodations, make the Argentine capital a worthwhile travel destination.
Buenos Aires, which in Spanish means ‘fair winds’, is a great introduction to the rest of the country. The main attractions here often involve the city's rich cultural diversity: colorful neighborhoods, architectural marvels, theater, arts and crafts markets, and fine restaurants. Locals are largely comprised of immigrants whose origins can be traced back to their arrival via the city's port. Hence, the people call themselves porteños. Aside from the city's cultural offerings, there are a number of parks to relax in.

Key attractions
Buenos Aires offers distinct attractions depending on which part of the city you find yourself in. The downtown area, Microcentro, has many important landmarks, such as the Casa Rosada (the president’s residence), the Plaza de Mayo square, and the Obelisco obelisk. Another district worth seeing is upscale Recoleta where you will find Buenos Aires' European side, with its elegant French mansions, restaurants, and museums. Finally, make sure to stop by La Boca district, a working class neighborhood with colorful houses.

Having fun
A great way to experience Buenos Aires' tango culture is by going to the Confiteria Ideal in Microcentro where dance lessons and parties are held regularly. Also in this neighborhood is Casa de la Cultura, a beautiful building where musical performances take place regularly. As for dining and drinking, the neighborhood of Palermo has both local and international restaurants, as well as hip and happening pubs and nightclubs.

Shopping
Microcentro has the lively Florida Street, a pedestrianized area known for its many shops, boutiques, and restaurants. Bookworms should consider heading to the antique bookstore of Libreria La Calesita, also in Microcentro. Other shopping districts in Buenos Aires include Palermo, where you can find not only arts and crafts shops, but high-end malls. Elsewhere, the expat-friendly Retiro district has high-end stores, along with sleek restaurants and cafés.

Nearby
One interesting daytrip from Buenos Aires is the hour-long ferry journey to Colonia del Sacramento. This town on the other side of the Rio Plata (Silver River), well into Uruguay territory, has a fairly intact historic center with lots of old colonial buildings. A more family-friendly daytrip from the city is Tigre, less than 20 miles north of the capital. Here, you will find a crafts fair, an amusement park, and peaceful promenades along the river.
