The former capital of the Habsburg Empire boasts a plethora of cultural attractions and performing arts hot spots which can be enjoyed from city hotels. There is a great choice of accommodations all within convenient range of the main sights.
A host of tourism draws and entertainment venues is hidden amid Vienna’s magnificent architecture. The whole of the Innere Stadt (inner city) has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Two stately palaces and a dedicated museum quarter offer collections of artworks, exhibits, and artifacts that would take months to see in their entirety. During the summer months, enjoying a gourmet coffee and dessert at one of the city’s ubiquitous outdoor cafés is heaven. After dark, there are countless nightlife establishments and performing arts venues to choose from.

Key attractions
The Hofburg Palace sits beside the vast Heldenplatz public square, in the middle of the Innere Stadt. Heldenplatz has played an important role in Austrian history and is the location where the country’s union with Germany was announced. Hofburg is a tourist’s delight, with Emperor Joseph II’s apartments attracting countless visitors annually. The Schonbrunn Palace and its fabulous gardens, as well as the Museumsquartier, are the other main cultural highlights. The quarter’s MUMOK houses 7,000 modern artworks. A walk through the sewers, immortalized in the classic film The Third Man, or a Danube river cruise are among other great city outings.

Having fun
Vienna boasts eclectic venues for entertainment and dining. The Vienna State Opera offers a program of opera classics from September to June. The Konzerthaus features a full schedule of concerts and is the venue for festivals such as May’s Internationale Musikfest. The English Theater offers English-language plays. Stephansplatz is the focal point of a selection of wine bars and traditional Viennese cafés. Bars at the Donaukanal are popular, while there is a choice of funky late-night venues in the Museumsquartier.

Shopping
Graben runs around Stephansplatz and is the location upmarket jewelry and fashion boutiques. Globally-recognized luxury brands, including Hermès and Cartier, have branches on nearby streets such as Karntnerstrasse and Kohlmarkt. Mariahilferstrasse runs out of the Innere Stadt to the West Railway Station and is lined with stores selling items such as clothing, accessories, and leather goods, as well as department stores. The Naschmarkt is the most famous of Vienna’s markets and a colorful spot to stroll through. Schonbrunn Christmas Market is staged from late November through to New Year’s Eve and has an excellent range of gifts, cakes, and other festive articles.

Nearby
Destinations for daytrips from Vienna are plentiful, allowing visitors to take a dip in a rejuvenating spa or even embark on a mountain hike. Schneeberg is a 70-mile journey away and offers hiking trails and a mountain railway. The beautiful Seegrotte underground lake and the historic spa town of Baden bei Wien are 15 miles away to the south. Baden is a pastoral spot with ambient cafés and more than a dozen spa resorts. The 12th century Heiligenkreuz Abbey is 40 minutes away by bus.
