Located in the southern part of the Istrian Peninsula, in the Adriatic, Pula is a Croatian city which effectively combines Roman ruins and a beautiful coastline. For the best accommodations, stay in the resorts which dot the Verudela Peninsula in the southern part of the city.
Pula is a large, commercial city. However, unlike many such cities, Pula's old town charms have remained and are indeed what many tourists come here for. It became a Roman town when the region was conquered in 177 BC, and ancient structures are today its main tourist drawcards. Pula's historical aspect is exponentially helped by its beautiful location, which makes for one of the best holiday destinations in the entire Mediterranean. Seaside resorts, stunning islands, and fabulous restaurants make Pula one of the must-visits in the Adriatic.

Key attractions

Right in the center of the city is one of only six remaining ancient Roman amphitheater in existence today. The Arena, as it is called, survived the city's tumultuous history and can be visited today. As with most Roman towns, Pula once had a forum, which today is the city's main plaza. The Temple of Augustus here should not be missed. For a look into Pula's more recent history, you can go to Zerostrasse, a tunnel system constructed in the early 1900s as a safe refuge for the city's residents during WWI.

Having fun

Entertainment spots are scattered around town and events take place regularly, especially at weekends. Cabahia in the Veruda area is a music venue that always has something happening on any given weekend. A good place to check-out Pula's art scene is Rojc, where both exhibits and performances take place. The highly recommended Amfiteatar restaurant serves Croatian favorites in a lovely setting. For a more rustic experience, there's Vodnjanka Trattoria along Vitezića Street.

Shopping

Many areas in Pula sell great merchandise. In the city center, you have Sergijevaca Street. Start walking at the Arch of Sergii to discover the open-air stalls here, which sell local produce and handicrafts that make for great souvenirs. On the other side of the arch is Flanaticka Street, where various international and local brands of clothing and accessories can be found. Flanaticka also has a fresh produce and meats section. A few minutes’ drive from the city center is Mercator, a shopping center with a large supermarket.

Nearby

Seeing the spectacular natural scenery of the region is the perfect daytrip from Pula. Those who come in the warm months can go swimming at the beaches of Kamenjak, just a few miles south of Pula in Premantura. The stunning turquoise waters of the Adriatic here are beautiful. Off the coast of Pula is yet another Adriatic gem: Brijuni National Park. Aside from beaches, the park has a golf course, archeological sites, and bike trails.
