It started with a fortress built by the Roman emperor Diocletian in the original Greek colony of Aspalathos. Little did the emperor know he had just founded what would become one of the most beautiful cities in the Mediterranean—Split. Hotels in the city continue to improve as new, modern lodgings pop up.
Split is a stepping stone for holiday makers on their way to explore the various gems of the Dalmatian coast. More recently, however, people are beginning to visit the city in its own right, particularly for the glimpse it offers into how people in this region live. Visitors who choose to stay a couple of nights or more can discover the city's great dining and drinking scenes, its ancient landmarks, its sunny weather, and its spectacular landscapes and seascapes.

Key attractions

Split's historic quarter revolves around Diocletian's Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Around its remains, you will find a thriving area full of cafés, bars, and hang-out spots where even the locals go. St Domnius Cathedral is worth seeing but a more modern side of Split can be seen in the Poljud Stadium, a 35,000-capacity venue constructed for the Mediterranean Games of 1979. Make sure to take advantage of Split’s beautiful natural surroundings, especially in Marjan, a hill which locals use for biking, walking, and days out.

Having fun

Theater performances in the form of music, dance, opera, and ballet can be experienced at the beautiful Croatia National Theater. Various acts regularly stage shows here. Eating and drinking in Split is exceptionally good, as is the case in many cities along the Dalmatian coast. The influence of nearby Italy can be seen in its cuisine, and the locally-produced cheeses and hams are well worth trying. Traditional Croatian food can be had in places like Kod Joze, while Pizzeria Bakra serves the best pizza in town.

Shopping

Numerous local markets and shopping malls make up the fine shopping to be had in Split. The Split Daily Market near the ferry wharf may have everything you need during your visit and more. Sold here are local produce, cakes, souvenirs, clothing, and various other things. The shops at Diocletian's Palace are touristier. Watch out for jewelry and arts and crafts here. Modern shopping malls in town include Joker and City Center One.

Nearby

A great history-filled daytrip from Split is a visit to the Klis Fortress, in the village of Klis, located within an hour by car to the north of the city. The crumbling yet still imposing structure here date back to the 3rd century when the area was controlled by the Dalmatae tribe. Another great daytrip from Split involves catching any one of the many regular ferries which take people to Hvar. This island in the Adriatic has stunning beaches and coves with equally stunning hills as a backdrop.
