There was a time when the capital of Croatia was seen predominantly as a transport gateway. Visitors have since discovered there is much to see in this old Adriatic city. Excellent places to stay in Zagreb are found in the city center, from cheap to luxury hotels.
Zagreb is a city with a peculiar location. Part of it is located in the Sava Valley, while another part is on the lower slopes of Sljeme Mountain. This diverse city with a cosmopolitan vibe is the home of Croatia's central government, scientific bodies, and media organizations. For tourists, Zagreb's hub status means all kinds of interesting things to see and do. There are fine museums, art galleries, cozy cafés, Austro-Hungarian buildings, and much more.

Key attractions

The cultural core of Zagreb is divided into two parts: the Upper Town and Lower Town. This is where you will see many of the city's noteworthy sights, restaurants, and shops. The Upper Town is a must-see for its historic monuments, namely the Old Town Gate and Zagreb Cathedral. Overlooking the city is Medvedgrad, the most important medieval structure of the city. Worth a look are Zagreb's museums, like the Archaeological Museum for its Egyptian, Roman, and Etruscan artifacts, and the Mimara Museum for the city's finest works of art.

Having fun

You can head to Kino Europa, the oldest cinema in Zagreb, to catch any one of its regular movie screenings, or simply take in the surroundings from one of the cafés or bars here. For visitors who come in the summer, the Strossmayer Promenade is the perfect place to stroll, with artists and musicians alike staging acts here. Restaurants and bars can easily be found in the city center. Cuisines range from traditional Croatian to Japanese, Mexican, and Italian. Drinking spots are concentrated around Jelacic Square and Cvjetni Square.

Shopping

Those looking for souvenirs might like to visit the tourist information center in Jelacic Square. For visitors looking to score the best finds in the city, Hrelic flea market happens every Sunday. Clothing by independent designers and all sorts of artwork are what you will find in Prostor. Meanwhile, Croatian wine and gourmet food can be bought at Bornstein. Shopping malls in the city include Avenue Mall and City Center One.

Nearby

Zagreb has many good daytrips for those who would like to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city for a few hours. Medvednica is a mountain and nature park just a few minutes by car north of Zagreb. Biking, walking, and hiking trails can be found here. For those who just want to relax, the park has a number of cafés and restaurants. About 30 minutes to the west of the city by car is the beautifully-preserved medieval city of Samobor, another good daytrip from the capital.
