Key attractions
Prague Castle is a massive complex and an essential destination for visitors. Inside its walls, St Vitus’s Cathedral, palace chambers, and the Changing of the Guard are among the draws. A stroll across the 15th century Charles Bridge leads to Stare Mesto where sights include the Astronomical Clock, which dates from the 1400s. Around 20 museums include the Czech National Gallery as well as a military museum. A cruise along the Vltava offers a different perspective of Prague. Park areas on Petrin Hill are a playground for city residents. Paths lead to the top of the 130-meter hill, from where the views are amazing.
Having fun
Entertainment in Prague covers the whole gamut, from classical music concerts to dancing the night away at pulsating discos. The Rudolfinum Concert Hall is home to the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra and has musical performances all year round. The Old Town square is the focal point of nightlife here. The square’s Café Mozart has regular musical recitals. Hospoda are traditional Czech pubs and the best places to sample the country’s nectar-like beers. The renowned Karlovy Lazne Club is one of several clubs in this area. Heading east past the State Opera House, the Zizkov district boasts in excess of 300 bars. Stare Mesto and the castle area offer the widest choices of restaurants in the city.
Shopping
The zone of Stare Mesto, between Old Town Square and the Charles Bridge, is the epicenter of Prague’s shops. The main street here is Karlova, which has a dizzying array of souvenir and gift stores. Parizska leads north out of the square, and Cartier is one of the elite brands with a branch on it. The Palladium is one of a number of city shopping malls; it houses 200 retail and dining establishments. Meanwhile, the OC Letnany in the Veselska district is the biggest mall in the country, and the Prague Market is a short tram ride from the center.
Nearby
After Prague, Karlstejn castle is the country’s most famous tourist site. This magical edifice dates from the 14th century and is around 40 minutes by train from the city. Konopiste, 30 miles outside the city, is a magnificent chateau and former residence of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Kutna Hora is a 50-mile trip away and home to the fabulous St Barbara's Cathedral and the Czech Silver Museum. Terezin is about one hour away by car and the site of a WWII Nazi holding camp, while Prerov nad Labem is an interesting al fresco museum 25 miles eastward.
