One of the most populated cities in the world, Tokyo is a pulsating holiday destination in which ancient Japan blends pleasingly with modern architecture and sparkling neon lights. There is a fine choice of hotels close to the main attractions and entertainment and business zones.
Until 1868, the metropolis that is now Japan’s capital was called Edo and was a small castle town. The site of the castle is now the location of one of the gardens the city is best noted for. Tokyo offers a range of attractions which span the whole gamut, from historic temples and shrines, to superb shopping and night-time entertainment. A diverse collection of museums covers themes from swords to the prehistoric era. The opportunity of sampling Japan’s famous cuisine, enjoying the thrills at the regional Disney Resort, and seeing the cherry blossoms in spring are among the other compelling reasons to take a trip to Tokyo.

Key attractions
Meiji Shrine is a Shinto shrine in the Shibuya area of the city. The shrine, together with temples such as Sensoji, Kaminarimon, and Kannondo in the Asakusa precinct, are essential visits for culture vultures. At nearby Ueno Park, Japan’s biggest traditional art museum and Ueno Zoo ensure it remains high on the agendas of tourists. The park is also famed for its flowering sakura (cherry blossoms). The Edo-Tokyo Museum depicts the city’s unique heritage. Many visitors use their Tokyo visit to take in a top-tier baseball match at the Tokyo Dome or a sumo-wrestling tourney at Ryougoku Sumo Hall.

Having fun
Tokyo’s myriad entertainment options provide something for people of all age groups. Since it opened in the 1980s, the family-friendly Tokyo Disney Resort has evolved into the attraction of choice for visitors. Shinjuku’s ultra-modern National Theater is the premier performing arts venue in the country. There are an estimated 3,000 bars, clubs, and massage parlors in the Kabukicho district. Nightclubs in Roppongi are more popular with international tourists. Trendy lounges and cafés in Harajuku attract a hip crowd. Restaurants in the Shinjuku and Shibuya areas serve authentic Japanese dishes, while Ginza has a choice of eateries serving international delicacies.

Shopping
Tokyo is a shopper’s delight, and visitors find they rarely return home without some extra purchases in their luggage. A cluster of exclusive department stores, including Wako and Matsuya, has rightly made Ginza the city’s leading retail precinct. Prada is among the designer labels with outlets in this area. The pedestrianized Takeshita Street in Harajuku features eclectic boutiques and specialty stores. Shinjuku shops and departments stores carry a broad selection of products and are renowned for their outlets selling cameras and books. Akihabara is the place to pick up technological gadgets and electronic appliances.

Nearby
Excellent public transportation and the easy availability of rental cars allow for easy access to nearby tourist destinations in the Kanto region. Hakone is less than one hour west by fast train and boasts picturesque mountain hiking trails and onsen hot springs. Nearby Odawara is home to a stately castle and a popular spot to take in the annual cherry blossoms. Osima is the closest of the seven Izu archipelago islands and around 90 minutes away by fast-ferry. The island offers black-sand beaches and the chance to trek to the edge of the Mt Mihara volcanic crater.
