The British trading colony-cum-classy city-state boasts unrivalled shopping and just the most unbelievable selection of mid- to-high-end hotels in the Orchard Road and Riverside areas. Many function as entire entertainment plazas, such as Marina Bay.
Multicultural Singapore is the most prim and proper destination in Asia, a fantastic example of a city that just works (particularly after visiting nearby Indonesia or Thailand) and ticks most boxes. The shopping, eating, sightseeing and polite, English-speaking natives are all major draws, plus it also comes with sandy beaches and some of the best preserved British colonial architecture in Asia. While the climate can be oppressive, the vast, glitzy, air-conditioned shopping malls provide easy respite and there are large tracts of countryside to explore.

Key attractions
Most attractions in this island nation are very well done and of the eye-popping variety, such as the curious Merlion statues found at the harbor and Sentosa Island. There are some excellent British colonial reminders all around Singapore, too, including the stunning Padang area and along the Singapore River, with Parliament House and selected museums being especially prominent. The beaches and theme parks rides of Sentosa Island are also right up there, along with the Marina Bay Sands complex and the world class Night Safari.

Having fun
The many cultures living here see to it that nightly entertainment is varied—think Broadway productions, Chinese opera street-side, and quality performances by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. Eating is excellent and cheap in the ethnic enclaves of Chinatown, Arab Town, and Little India, while the numerous malls also have food courts. Every class hotel has a bar and restaurant (or three) and some of the hippest nightclubs in Asia can be found in this city. Rub shoulders with other tourists and locals on the bustling Boat and Clark quays by night.

Shopping
Shopping is the number one attraction in Singapore today, with the famous Orchard Road the main drag for brand name goods and glitz. There is an inordinate number of malls and classy hotels along this strip, such that it is hard to know where to go next. Chinatown and Little India are great for bargains, the latter also hosting the bustling Sim Lim Square for cameras and electronics goods. Even the airport is fantastic for shoppers. Do the Grand Singapore Sale in July.

Nearby
Traffic and rush hours notwithstanding, all of Singapore’s territory is within an hour’s drive, usually less. A couple of must-sees on the island as daytrips might include the East Coast Park, with beaches and lots of kiddy attractions, and the expansive Bukit Timah Nature Reserve in the center. The Malay town of Johor Bahru is just across the Causeway and good for cheaper shopping and eating, and there is a choice of islands to take in. Batam (Indonesia) is the most popular, while larger Bintan offers the chance of a bit of solitude.
