The Swedish ‘capital of cool’ basks along myriad waterways and boasts a stunning selection of upscale, four-star hotels all competing for visitors’ attention. Historical architecture and fascinating museums are de rigueur here, and the Stockholm Archipelago is all around.
The Swedish capital is one of Scandinavia’s most diverse cities in both culture and setting, with multiple languages spoken across a plethora of islands. A very green and watery city, it is well planned and has bags of character, such that visitors rarely come away disappointed. Very much a place built with the pedestrian in mind, there is gorgeous potential for strolling in Stockholm, which retains many of its ancient buildings while also offering attractive shopping and tasty eating.

Key attractions
Gamla Stan is the highlight; the small island that harbors the Old Town and which is filled with snap-happy tourists. Much of it remains well preserved—it wasn’t bombed in WWII—with old buildings and tight, cobbled alleys all around. The Royal Palace is an ancient focal point here, and the nearby City Hall and Stockholm museums are world class. Across from Gamla Stan is Djurgarden, home to the impressive Gröna Lund park and the zoo, while high points on Södermalm afford the finest views over the city.

Having fun
The elevated Norrmalm area to the north of Gamla Stan has some of the best dining and the most cultured entertainment, with the House of Culture playing host to the Stockholm City Theater. You can get a traditional Swedish smorgasbord just about anywhere, but be aware that kitchens often close early at weekends. Sandys is a good local chain with moderate pricing. For pubs and clubs, visit the Kungsgatan and Stureplan areas, with Södermalm being more local, while jazz concerts on summer evenings are also a hit.

Shopping
Stockholm is big into the fashion industry as you will see evidenced by the trendy boutiques dotted about. Gamla Stan is loaded with them—head along Drottninggatan—while Östermalm (next to Norrmalm) is more about classic designer wear by big names. On more laid-back Södermalm island is SoFo’s eclectic, alternative shops. For mall shopping, check out one of the city’s oldest, Gallerian on Hamngatan, and keep an eye out for end-of-season sales in September.

Nearby
The Stockholm archipelago spans literally thousands of islands in southern Sweden, parts of which can be explored by car via a network of bridges. Vaxholm, a major starting point and accessible by ferry, has a fine castle. Forty minutes’ drive to the north is Sigtuna, an ancient town, while roughly the same journey duration to the south is the fun spa town of Nynäshamn, which resides on the coast. If you’re looking for action, Uppsala is a cool, happening university town an hour by car to the north.
