Turkish seaside resort Bodrum has long been considered the country's premiere holiday destination. This ancient Mediterranean city turned fishing village has a fine selection of hotels and guest houses in line with its premiere tourist spot status.

Bodrum has its origins as the ancient Greek city of Halicarnassus. Its golden age saw the construction of the Mausoleum, one of the wonders of the ancient world. Later, it became a quiet village where Turkish exiles were sent but by the mid-1900s, it slowly became a veritable playground for the country's wealthy. Today, thousands of visitors come here to see the contrasts between Bodrum's long history and its modern, tourist-friendly aspect.

Key attractions
Historical attractions figure prominently in this historic city. The ruins of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, close to the central marina area, can be visited. The sea-facing Bodrum Castle, constructed in the early 1400s, is another imposing historical landmark which is worth visiting. Make sure to visit the highly acclaimed Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology which is located inside the castle. The Roman-era amphitheatre is perhaps the best preserved ancient structure in the city and consequently a must-see.

Having fun
Summer tourists seeking fun and entertainment need go no further than the city's beautiful and lively marina area. Bars and restaurants here usually hold musical performances nightly. Holidaymakers looking to splurge on a fine meal can head to Kocadon, near the marina. This restaurant serves fine Turkish food and provides entertainment in the form of live jazz. Other nightlife spots in town include the Marine Club party cruise and Halikarnas, a large outdoor nightclub.

Shopping
There is some great shopping to be had in Bodrum. The marina has a shopping arcade with numerous stores selling clothes and accessories at reasonable prices. Near the bus station is Bodrum's weekly market, which is open every Tuesday and Friday. Tuesday is clothing and jewelry day, while Friday is fresh produce day. Close to Bodrum Castle is the pedestrianized and covered Old Town Bazaar for arts, crafts and souvenirs. For a more modern shopping experience, you can head to the Midtown Mall or the Oasis Shopping Centre.

Nearby
Visitors who only have time to see Bodrum and the surrounding areas can hop on a ferry to the Greek island of Rhodes. Rhodes is famous throughout the Mediterranean for its beautiful beaches, outstanding ancient monuments and medieval remains. To experience an authentic Turkish fishing village, head to Gumusluk. It has a small but beautiful bay and seaside restaurants. The same can be said for Yalikavak, a coastal town with stunning waters which are perfect for sailing.
