When to visit based on price
Between June and September should reward you with lower rates and much less crowds when visiting Palm Springs.
Key attractions
Not for the feint of heart, but thrilling for everyone, taking the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is a major attraction. You will be venturing on a tem minute journey in the sky, to the shear cliffs and Chino Canyon wall. During winter months you can rent snowshoes or cross-country skis and enjoy the pure white trails. During summer months take a guided tour, or just walk the trails on your own. Keep in mind that as you climb in the tram, you will be experiencing multiple climate zones, so even when you wear shorts and t’s down below, you might need that sweatshirt on top.
It may sound like not much of an attraction but one of the major tourist destinations in Palm Springs is a tour of the windmills. You can’t appreciate the magnitude of these awesome giant wind-generating units until you stand below one. On this tour you will be in the middle of over 3,500 of these giants.
You might just want to spend a few hours at the Palm Springs Air Museum, where you will experience one of the largest collections of WWII fighting planes in the world. You can actually get inside a B-17 bomber, sit in the seat of a flight simulator and take the test. If old warplanes aren’t your thing, there’s an interesting collection of antique cars too.
Having fun
For the ladies, Palm Springs if famous for it’s spa’s and hot mineral springs, so while the guys hit the golf links, there’s a mineral soak and a pedicure awaiting you. There’s no shortage of day spas, offering Therapeutic Mineral Waters, Hot Springs and professional massage therapists.
One of the main reasons most people live and or visit Palm Springs is for the fantastic weather and the golf. If you think that you will have a problem getting a t-time, think again. There are over 130 super golf courses in the greater Palm Springs area. You will always have the opportunity to play world-class golf in Palm Springs. Some of the most well-known and popular courses are PGA West, Indian Wells, Shadow Ridge and LaQuinta. If one of these is in your upcoming playbook, it’s advisable to call well in advance for a t-time.
Shopping
For all your shopping pleasures, there’s the Palm Springs Area Outlet Malls where you can browse over 130 stores. From discount stores to designer labels for you or your home, they can be found here. In fact, rumor has it that if you can’t find it here, it probably doesn’t exist.
Nearby
A day trip away, the beaches of Southern California are within reach. You can head over to the Santa Monica Pier and hit the beach, or go shopping on the Third Street Promenade, where all the “trendy” stores are, but prices are sweet. You can grab lunch at one of the many pier restaurants, rent a bike and work that burger or pizza off peddling the boardwalk and pier.
Only 1.5 hours south of Palm Springs you can find Temecula Wine Country, and some excellent smaller artisan wineries. This quaint little town in the middle of the desert is a nice place to stroll, sip wines, have a picnic lunch at one of the wineries, and shop antiques.
If the weather is right and you enjoy hiking or rock climbing, then you could take a ride to Joshua tree National Park. To get there you would take Highway 62 out of town. Bring your camera and or smart phone, because you will encounter some excellent photo ops, especially with a Joshua tree or two.
