When to visit based on price

The spring and fall months seem to offer fewer crowds of visitors and lower prices. Plan your visit between October and February. Keep in mind holidays bring crowds.

Key attractions

There’s just something special about Old Sacramento, from it’s old time ice crème parlors, bar’s, and costume shops. While there you can visit the old train station and actually see an old-time steam train drive up the tracks. Don’t forget to take a tour aboard the Delta King, an authentic riverboat that’s now a hotel, with lounge and restaurant.
Visit Sutter’s Fort and learn about the early pioneer families that arrived here during the California Gold Rush. Learn about the tragic Donner Party and how this fort played a part in the rescue, and also the Mexican government back in the mid 1800’s.
The Sacramento Zoo, although small is a great place to visit endangered animals as well as their one year old Sumatran Tiger. Not the only “kitty” at the zoo, you can see jaguars, African Lions, and snow Leopards. Also there are quite a few different primates, including the Sumatran Orangutan.

Having fun

If it’s time to cool off, then head to Raging Waters Sacramento at the Cal Expo Center. There’s water activities for the whole family, with over 25 water attractions, large pools for young and old, “take your breath away” water slides and much more.
For the golfers, there are multiple links for you to spend some time with the little white ball. Haggin Oaks has two championship courses, Micke Grove, Elkhorn and more. As always, if you’re visiting during a busy season or holiday, advanced t-times are suggested.

Shopping

If the shops in Old Sacramento aren’t enough, then here are a few choices to get some shopping in. Arden Fair Mall is the biggest group of shops in the city, with over 160 stores. From Coach, Disney and Apple, to Nordstrom’s and Macy’s, you should satisfy your shopping bug.
Another shopping area that caters to the upscale shopper is Pavillions, where Franco Ferrini Shoes, Ralph Lauren and Williams Sonoma reside.
If you have spent time in Old Sacramento, and would like to walk to another shopping area, there’s an underground walkway to Westfield Downtown Plaza, with another 75 or more stores available to you.

Nearby

A really nice adventure from Sacramento is the town of Placerville located thirty minutes from town. This historic Gold Rush town’s Main Street is lined with historic buildings that have been preserved well. This town was originally called Dry Diggins, and later changed its name to Hangtown. The reason for the change is because it was one of the first towns in the west to hang outlaws convicted of crimes. For your drive, there’s the reward of Starbucks in town, and for adults, an excellent brewery / restaurant on Main Street.
If you’re just itching to visit Napa Wine Country, you’re in luck because it’s a good daytrip from Sacramento. A visit to Napa brings not only some of the best wineries and wines in the U.S., but also offers you a charming downtown of beautiful old homes and boutique shops. When entering the Napa area via Highway 29, you’ll first encounter Yountville, home to Domaine Chandon and the Vintage Marketplace. This is a nice stop for the shops and possibly a fresh deli sandwich.
Further down the road you’ll encounter Opus One, Robert Mondovi and many other well-known wineries. Take note when you come across the Oakville Grocery because this is one of the cutest little stores, and an excellent place to get a picnic lunch to go. Most of the wineries offer tables, chairs and garden areas for just that.
