Key attractions
Landmarks include the 19th century Old Louisiana State Capitol, now a museum but once the hub of local politics, and its Art Deco successor is impressive. For a glimpse into plantation life, visits to Notoway, Myrtles, and Magnolia House mansions with their antebellum architecture make for a great day out, and the Louisiana State Museum’s Rural Life Museum displays settlers’ and farmers’ lives over the ages. Baton Rouge Zoo and the Art and Science Museum are fun for family visits, as is the Blue Bayou Water Park and the USS Kidd, a WWII destroyer moored at the port.
Having fun
Baton Rouge is big on fun, to the extent that it has two designated arts and cultural districts, Mid-City and Perkins Road. The university’s Swine Palace is a premier theater company with regular shows, there’s an upcoming Circus Artists group, and professional opera and ballet companies perform regularly, as does the city’s Symphony Orchestra. The dining scene here focuses mostly on traditional Southern family foods with a good sprinkling of Indian, Chinese, Mexican, and other ethnic eateries, and the liveliest bars are found around the university.
Shopping
Shopping outlets in Baton Rouge are mainly centered on local trade, with the Mall of Louisiana on Bluebonnet Boulevard the most popular. Brand name stores, a department store, and various individual boutiques and electronics stores, a movie theatre, and the usual fast food outlets keep residents happy as well as those on a weekend shop from rural areas. The town center holds most of the venues, and the suburban areas each have their own, smaller shopping centers. As in most US cities, factory outlets offering bargain fashions can be found on the outskirts of town.
Nearby
Baton Rouge is the perfect base for a daytrip to the South’s most famous tourist destination, New Orleans, with its picturesque French Quarter, mysterious voodoo legends, and jazz-flavored nightlife. Other districts have their own charms, such as the beautiful architecture and funky stores of Uptown, Frenchman’s Street with its authentic jazz in Downriver, the restaurants and forts in Lakeside, and the historic Algiers quarter. The Cajun Wetlands and their quaint villages will delight eco-buffs, and Lafayette is known for its National Parks Museum.
