The Motor City may have been knocked to the mat in recent years but Detroit is making noble strides to lift itself out of recession and rebuild itself into a model of culture, sports, and entertainment in the Midwest. Hotel rates are just one of the tremendous bargains on offer here.
In its day, Detroit was one of America’s most prosperous and most industrious cities. Many of its modern attractions reflect its automotive heritage, rounded off by a thriving professional sports scene and a burgeoning cultural movement focused on dining and nightlife. There are casinos waiting for your bets, the three-block Cultural Center oasis where art, history, and ethnicity are on display, and a superb jazz and blues music scene that has been around since the beginning.

Key attractions
Detroit made its name with the Ford family and the manufacturing of America’s first cars. Henry Ford left many legacies to his home city, including the fascinating Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village, a 12-acre showcase of American inventiveness and innovation. The Detroit Institute of Arts offers a solid collection of master artwork, while the creatures on display at the Detroit Zoo and Aquarium will delight children. Music fans can revel in the groove projected at the Motown Historical Museum.

Having fun
From its roots of jazz and blues to the rise of the Motown sound, Detroit has always had a deep connection to live music. The jazz has been pouring out of Baker’s Keyboard Lounge for over seven decades, and this venue remains a sacred spot for any fan of quality music. This city is also nuts about its sports teams so any game night at Nemo’s or the Post Bar guarantees a fun, rowdy atmosphere. The Detroit Symphony Orchestra is considered one of America’s finest, and if you feel lucky, step into one of the city’s casinos, like the MGM Grand or the MotorCity Casino.

Shopping
Although Detroit is not known as a shopping destination, visitors will find a patchwork of ethnic neighborhoods in the downtown area. Each district features its own distinct variety of stores. Hot items to hunt for in Motor City include vinyl records at shops like Peoples Records or used books at the vast John K King Books outlet. There are traditional shopping malls as well, such as the pleasant Riverfront Shops, and historic farmers’ markets, like the Eastern Market.

Nearby
Detroit is well-positioned for daytrips into Canada’s province of Ontario and to several other notable Michigan cities. Drive 15 minutes through the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel to reach the Canadian town of Windsor, a nice little tourist spot with loads of small-town dining, shopping, and entertainment. Check out the buzzing college scene in Ann Arbor, home to the University of Michigan, just 30 minutes away. Michigan’s second-largest city is Grand Rapids, a short drive along the banks of Lake Michigan.
